这是一本背景设定非常简单的科幻小说，前半段讲述了猎人如何在路边设置同样的陷阱，遵循同样的操作流程和安全准则，捕获一个又一个的猎物，主要篇幅用于描写猎人的心理活动和对猎物的观察；后半段则将重点放在了猎物交付给屠夫以后，猎人在屠宰场的所见所闻。事实上，对比于其他叙事背景更为宏大的科幻小说，本书故事并没有太多的出人意料之处，没有任何的高科技场面，也没有想象当中的血腥，甚至全书最大的悬念就写在书封面上，这是一个外星生物捕猎人类为食的故事。就像人类猎捕、圈养其他动物为食一样，故事并不曲折，猎人只要严格遵守操作手册就会成功完成任务。 然而整个阅读过程还是让我屏气凝神、心跳加速，因为知道故事梗概是一回事，而作者对细节刻画带来的感受又是另一回事。

很多人认为本书是科幻界的环保力作，这是毋庸置疑的，而我同时被打动的还有作者的写作方式。书中刻意对猎人（外星生物）的心理活动娓娓道来，而对猎物（人类）仅仅进行简单的行为描述，这种写作方式让读者有时会很自然的代入到猎人的角色中，并给与其同理心，以至于忘记了我们正是书中被猎捕屠宰的同类。当一个生命体不能让他的所思所想被看见，就很难获得同理心，从而被忽略感受、物化对待，这不仅仅是物种之间的隔阂，人类同伴间也如此：不能不敢不愿意说话的人、不会写字的人，瘫痪在床的人，不被允许发言的人、被新闻媒体忽略的人、很多人。
