首先我需要说明，这不是一本可以快速阅读的书，我花了整整两个星期才断断续续的看完。一来是书本身厚，二来是里面的文字，多数都是需要细细看、结合自己记忆中的历史叙事来进行思考的。

中国自秦汉以来就是世界上的大国，一直到了晚清才开始被迫注意到「天下」还有其它「国家」的存在。而日本从千年来「以汉文化为中心的边缘地带」，在经历了黑船来袭和明治维新之后，一跃成为东亚最强大的军事力量，逐步走向了帝国和侵略，并最终走向自我毁灭。

近现代历史对于中国而言是充满血泪的，时至今日依然是国民历史教育的重要内容。前事不忘，后事之师。我们有义务去更加认真的去了解这一段历史，从更多的方面，去还原过去百年中国、日本、以及整个世界的历史发展进程，并在这个过程中，更加真实的认识到中国的历史。

一开始我以为是粗浅的通俗读物，但是看到每一章后附的参考文献，让我意识到作者是按照严肃的论文来撰写的。一个意外的收获是在书的结尾，作者让我获得了一个新的视角，即历史叙事往往带有道德和信仰的判断，需要大量的专业性训练（和自省谦卑）才能够做到尽可能的客观描述。以后，小编1号还是少看一些戏说，多看一些严肃历史论著。
